BNP and other pro-democracy parties led the July movement: Mirza Fakhrul
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, "BNP is committed to establishing democracy, rule of law, good governance and justice. The people will decide the political fate of the country and democracy must be restored through a free and fair election."
He made these remarks at an iftar party organized at a hotel in the capital on Thursday. Diplomats from various countries working in Dhaka were present at the event.
Mirza Fakhrul said, the July-August mass uprising was an expression of the people's anger against fascism. It was part of the long-standing struggle of the democracy-loving people of Bangladesh. BNP and other pro-democracy parties led this movement. This mass uprising represents the collective freedom of the entire nation. About 1,400 people, including women and children, were killed in that repression. In addition, thousands of BNP workers have lost their lives, been subjected to disappearances and torture in the last 15 years.
Mirza Fakhrul expressed hope that the international community would cooperate in restoring democracy in Bangladesh and that the country's progress would be ensured on the basis of partnership.
